About the Bamako Convention

Scope of the Convention

Derived from Basel Convention Article 11, the Convention covers various wastes, including radioactive and banned hazardous substances. The Bamako Convention is a regional agreement addressing hazardous waste management, reflecting the collective commitment of African nations to protect their environment and public health from hazardous waste.

General obligations

Countries must ban importing hazardous and radioactive wastes, and ocean disposal. In Intra-African waste trade, parties should minimize trans-boundary movement with consent, control production, and cooperate for environmentally sound treatment and disposal. The Convention sets up a notification and consent system among African countries.
